World Cup 2026: Argentina Ranked #1, Portugal Holds 5th
The stage is set for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, and the latest rankings released on opening day reveal a new leader at the summit of world football. Defending champions Argentina have reclaimed the number one spot, while Portugal holds steady in fifth place as they prepare for their campaign in North America.
Argentina Back on Top as France Slips
In a final shake-up before the tournament kicks off across the United States, Canada, and Mexico, Argentina surged from third to first, overtaking both Spain and France. Spain remains firm in second place, while France, the 2022 finalists, dropped to third. England rounds out the top four, sitting just ahead of Portugal’s “Equipa das Quinas.”
The top 10 remained largely stable, with one notable exception: Morocco has overtaken the Netherlands to claim seventh place, signaling the continued rise of African football on the global stage.
Challenges Ahead for Portugal
Portugal enters Group K as the clear favorite according to the rankings. Their opening-round opponents remain positioned safely outside the top 10, with Colombia holding steady at 13th, DR Congo at 46th, and Uzbekistan at 50th.
While Portugal represents the highest-ranked Lusophone nation, Brazil follows closely behind in sixth. Further down the list, Cape Verde continues its upward trajectory ahead of its historic World Cup debut, climbing to 67th. Other Portuguese-speaking nations saw mixed results, with Angola rising to 88th and Mozambique sitting at 103rd.
The Coaching Landscape
The 2026 World Cup will feature a tactical presence from Portugal, though largely on the sidelines of other nations. Veteran manager Carlos Queiroz remains the sole Portuguese head coach in the tournament, leading 73rd-ranked Ghana. Meanwhile, Hélio Sousa saw his Kuwait side rise to 133rd, and Paulo Duarte’s Guinea side dipped to 81st place.
