Portugal 5th in FIFA Rankings as Argentina Reclaims #1 Spot
The Portuguese national football team will head into the 2026 World Cup as the fifth-ranked team in the world, according to the latest FIFA rankings released today to coincide with the tournament’s opening day. The “Equipa das Quinas” held steady in the position they first claimed in April, solidifying their status as one of the heavyweights to watch as action kicks off across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
The Global Top Five
While Portugal remained stagnant, there was a shake-up at the very top of the ladder. Reigning world champions Argentina have reclaimed the number one spot, leapfrogging France. The French squad, runners-up at the last World Cup, tumbled two places down to third. Meanwhile, reigning European champions Spain held firm in second place, and England maintained their grip on fourth, just ahead of Portugal.
The only other movement within the top 10 saw Morocco continue their impressive rise, overtaking the Netherlands to secure seventh place.
Scouting the Group K Competition
As Portugal prepares for its group stage campaign, their opponents’ rankings suggest a favorable path, though not without challenges. Colombia remains the biggest threat in Group K, holding steady at 13th. The Democratic Republic of Congo (46th) and Uzbekistan (50th) round out the group, maintaining their positions from the April update.
Lusophone Nations and Notable Moves
Beyond the giants of the game, Cape Verde continues to make headlines. Preparing for its historic World Cup debut, the nation climbed two spots to 67th, remaining the highest-ranked Portuguese-speaking nation after Brazil (6th). Other Lusophone rankings include Angola at 88th and Mozambique at 103rd.
Notably, Carlos Queiroz will carry the flag for Portuguese coaching excellence in this tournament. He is the sole Portuguese manager at the 2026 World Cup, leading a 73rd-ranked Ghana side.
