Macau Foundation Grants €1.2M to Portuguese Heritage Projects
The Macau Foundation injected approximately 11.7 million patacas (€1.23 million) into organizations dedicated to Portuguese heritage and Lusophone culture during the first quarter of 2026. This funding underscores the foundation’s ongoing commitment to preserving the enclave’s unique Luso-Chinese identity through education, social welfare, and cultural exchange.
Education and Academic Support Lead Funding
The Macau Portuguese School Foundation emerged as a primary beneficiary, receiving 4.5 million patacas (€476,000) under the Integrated Financial Support Plan to cover operating expenses for the current year. Other academic and research institutions followed suit, with the Institute of European Studies of Macau receiving multiple grants for training programs, conferences, and publications.
The Portuguese Institute of the Orient (IPOR) was awarded 84,000 patacas (€8,900) for community initiatives, while the International Institute of Macau secured 118,000 patacas (€12,500) to fund three specific editorial projects.
Strengthening Ties with African Lusophone Nations
A significant portion of the quarterly budget was dedicated to fostering talent from the broader Portuguese-speaking world. The foundation allocated 2.1 million patacas (€222,800) in scholarships for 36 students from Guinea-Bissau, Cape Verde, São Tomé and Príncipe, Angola, and Mozambique. These grants cover tuition, accommodation, and living allowances for degree-conferring courses during the 2025/2026 academic year.
Preserving Macanese Traditions and Social Welfare
The foundation also signaled its support for the local Macanese community. The Association of Macanese (ADM) received 725,440 patacas (€76,900) for its 2026 operations, while the Association for the Promotion of Macanese Instruction (APIM) was granted 399,720 patacas (€42,350). Cultural groups, such as the folk dance association “Macau no Coração,” also received funding for exchange programs.
In the social sector, Catholic charitable organizations received support for festive outreach. Caritas Macau was awarded 1.43 million patacas (€151,400) and the Holy House of Mercy (Santa Casa da Misericórdia) received 136,230 patacas (€14,440) specifically for the distribution of Chinese New Year hampers.
A Multi-Billion Pataca Mandate
These grants represent only a fraction of the Macau Foundation’s massive reach. Driven by a mandate to promote cultural, educational, and philanthropic activities, the foundation manages a total fund of approximately 43 billion patacas (€4.55 billion). Its capital is largely sustained by a 1.6% levy on the annual gross revenue of Macau’s gaming operators.
The recent surge in funding follows a record-breaking 2025, where the foundation tripled its financial support to grant 1.79 billion patacas (€189.6 million) across more than 1,300 diverse projects.
