Portugal’s RHI Festival 2024: Exporting National Talent

The eighth edition of RHI (Revolution Hope Imagination) is set to sweep across Portugal from May 4 to 12, bringing a multidisciplinary wave of art, business, and tourism to 12 cities. Organized by the Arte Institute, the initiative serves as a powerhouse for Portuguese talent, designed to bridge the gap between creative expression and international market success.

A Nationwide Stage for Creativity

Over nine days, RHI will activate cultural hubs in Braga, Cascais, Évora, Faro, Funchal, Leiria, Lisbon, Loulé, Nazaré, Torres Novas, Torres Vedras, and Vidigueira. The festival offers a diverse and largely free program spanning cinema, music, visual arts, literature, dance, and theater, as well as sessions focused on science and citizenship.

Ana Ventura Miranda, director of the Arte Institute, emphasized that RHI is more than just a festival; it is a career-launching platform. “The project has showcased new Portuguese talent across the country and opened doors for international performances,” she stated. Past participants have secured bookings in global cultural capitals, including New York, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, and Cairo.

High-Profile Debates and Transitions

The event kicks off in Lisbon on May 4 at The Riverside Santa Apolónia Hotel with a seminar on the intersection of culture and tourism. Experts will debate how artistic movements drive economic growth and attract international visitors. Starting May 5, travelers at Lisbon’s Humberto Delgado Airport can explore the “Arte Box” exhibition, featuring large-format photographs celebrating the 25th anniversary of Focus Companhia de Dança.

Program Highlights Across the Regions:

  • Dance: Focus Companhia de Dança will perform “Still Reich” in Cascais, Leiria, Torres Novas, and Torres Vedras. These performances are among the few ticketed events, offered at symbolic prices.
  • Social Impact: Lectures in Torres Vedras and Loulé will explore art as a “bridge of understanding” and focus on inclusivity and accessibility within the creative industries.
  • Film: Évora will host the NY Portuguese Short Film Festival on May 10, while Faro showcases an animated short film festival.
  • Music: Funchal’s Baltazar Dias Municipal Theater will host MandoIsland and the production “Prazer em conhecer, Baltazar.” Meanwhile, Nazaré will feature American jazz musician Kassa Overall as part of the Valado Jazz Festival.
  • Literature: Torres Novas will become a hub for the publishing sector, hosting discussions on contemporary literature and internationalization strategies.

Fifteen Years of Global Outreach

The Arte Institute, founded in New York 15 years ago, remains a vital non-profit dedicated to promoting Lusophone culture worldwide. To date, the organization has supported over 1,500 artists and executed projects in 37 countries and 120 cities. This latest edition of RHI reinforces its mission to treat culture as a vital economic asset, fostering collaboration between creators, international programmers, and the public.
