Cape Verde Declares Holiday for Historic World Cup Debut
In a historic move to mark the nation’s first-ever appearance on football’s grandest stage, the Cape Verdean government has declared a national half-day holiday to allow citizens to cheer on the “Blue Sharks.”
National Holiday for World Cup Debut
Prime Minister Ulisses Correia e Silva announced on Wednesday that a resolution has been signed to grant time off to all state employees, public institute workers, and local authority staff on Monday, June 15. The holiday begins at 1:00 PM local time, ensuring the country is ready for the 3:00 PM kickoff against global giants Spain.
“This is an exceptional measure for an exceptional moment,” Correia e Silva shared via social media. “It is the debut of the Blue Sharks in the World Cup… allowing everyone to follow and support the national team during this historic match.”
The Road Ahead
Cape Verde enters the 2026 World Cup facing a formidable challenge in Group H. Following their high-stakes opener against Spain, the Blue Sharks are scheduled to face off against Uruguay and Saudi Arabia. This year’s tournament, running from June 11 to July 19, is the largest in history, featuring 48 teams competing across North America.
Honoring the Pioneers
The Prime Minister’s announcement wasn’t limited to the current squad. In a poignant tribute to the nation’s footballing history, Correia e Silva also announced the granting of special pensions to Cape Verde’s first international players.
He noted that these pioneers laid the groundwork for today’s success, competing “under difficult conditions” regarding infrastructure and financial resources. By honoring the veterans who paved the way, the government aims to link the nation’s humble sporting beginnings with its modern-day triumph on the world stage.
