World Cup 2026: Cape Verde Faces Uruguay After Spain Draw

Fresh off a historic stalemate against 2010 champions Spain, Cape Verde returns to the pitch today to face two-time World Cup winners Uruguay. The African side, making its absolute debut in the tournament, currently finds itself in a “state of grace” as it heads into the second round of Group H action in Miami Gardens.

Cape Verde Eyes Another Giant-Killing Performance

The “Blue Sharks” stunned the footballing world in the opening round by neutralizing Spain in a 0-0 draw. Remarkably, the Cape Verdeans managed to stifle the Spanish attack while committing only a single foul throughout the entire match. However, the road ahead remains steep. Today at 18:00 local time (23:00 Lisbon), they face a formidable Uruguayan side that won the title in 1930 and 1950.

Cape Verde coach Bubista leaned heavily on talent from the Portuguese leagues during the opener. Five players who finished the 2025/26 season in Portugal featured in the debut, including the “hero” goalkeeper Vozinha (Desportivo de Chaves), Sidny Lopes Cabral (Benfica), Jovane Cabral (Estrela da Amadora), Dailon Livramento (Casa Pia), and Telmo Arcanjo (Vitória de Guimarães).

Group H: A Wide-Open Race

Uruguay enters the match after a narrow escape in their opener against Saudi Arabia. It took an 80th-minute strike from Sporting CP’s Maxi Araújo to rescue a 1-1 draw. With every team in Group H tied on a single point, the stakes in Miami are high.

Earlier in the day, Spain will look to repair their image in Atlanta against a resilient Saudi Arabian squad. The Spanish side was criticized for a lack of scoring opportunities against Cape Verde, but they may receive a boost today: rising star Lamine Yamal is expected to be fit enough to join the starting XI after being limited to a late substitute appearance in the first round.

Groups G and H Locked in Stalemate

The 11th day of the tournament comes amid a rare “monopoly” of draws. Because every match in Groups G and H ended level in the first round, no team has yet secured mathematical qualification to join the United States, Mexico, and Germany in the next phase.

In Group G, Belgium looks to reassert their dominance after a disappointing 1-1 draw with Egypt. The “Red Devils” face Iran in Inglewood, while Egypt and New Zealand close out the day in Vancouver. New Zealand and Iran carry momentum into their second matches after an entertaining 2-2 draw in their opening clash.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup, hosted across the United States, Mexico, and Canada, continues its group stage until the final on July 19.
