Diego Forlán Named Uruguay National Team Head Coach
In a bold move to rejuvenate their footballing identity, the Uruguayan Football Association (AUF) announced on Tuesday that legendary striker Diego Forlán has been appointed as the new head coach of the Uruguay national team. The 47-year-old takes the reins at a critical juncture for the “Celeste,” assuming responsibility for both the senior squad and the U-20 national team.
Filling the Void Left by Marcelo Bielsa
Forlán succeeds Argentine tactician Marcelo Bielsa, whose tenure ended abruptly following Uruguay’s disappointing performance at the 2026 World Cup. Under Bielsa, the team suffered a shocking group-stage exit in North America, failing to secure a single victory. Despite featuring talents like Sporting CP’s Maxi Araújo and Rodrigo Zalazar, Uruguay finished third in Group H with just two points, following draws against Saudi Arabia (1-1) and Cape Verde (2-2), and a 1-0 loss to Spain.
A National Hero Returns
The appointment marks a homecoming for one of the most decorated figures in Uruguayan sports history. Forlán earned 112 caps for his country and was the talismanic figure behind their 2011 Copa América triumph. His illustrious playing career saw him reach the pinnacle of European club football, starring for powerhouses such as Manchester United, Atlético Madrid, and Inter Milan.
A Risk in the Dugout?
While Forlán’s pedigree as a player is unquestioned, his coaching resume remains slim. His previous managerial experience consists of two brief stints in his homeland: an 11-match run with Peñarol in 2020 and a 12-match spell with second-division side CA Atenas in 2021.
The AUF has not yet disclosed the duration of Forlán’s contract, but the decision clearly signals a desire to return to the nation’s footballing roots. Supporters will be hoping that the former Golden Ball winner can translate the clinical precision he displayed on the pitch into success from the technical area as Uruguay looks to rebuild for the next international cycle.
