Rolando: Cape Verde Can Reach World Cup Knockouts

Former Portuguese international Rolando believes the Cape Verde national team can secure a place in the 2026 World Cup knockout stages following a “remarkable debut” that saw the “Blue Sharks” hold European giants Spain to a scoreless draw.

The 40-year-old former central defender, who was born on the Cape Verdean island of São Vicente, said the team’s performance on Monday “surpassed the dreams” of the nation. He now hopes the squad, managed by Bubista, can capitalize on the momentum of their upset result against the European champions to navigate the rest of Group H.

Building on Defensive Resilience

“In the coming matches, Cape Verde must focus on what they did well and use the individual quality of the players to find goals,” Rolando told Lusa. “From the moment you draw with Spain, you start to dream of the next phase. The team needs to keep picking up points to continue making history.”

While acknowledging that Group H—which includes Uruguay and Saudi Arabia—is “extremely complicated,” Rolando insists that the players’ belief will only grow. He credited the team for achieving the “essential goal” of keeping a clean sheet, specifically praising goalkeeper Vozinha for “nullifying Spain’s strengths” via a series of standout saves.

A Small Nation with a Big Heart

Rolando, who enjoyed a long career with clubs including FC Porto, Belenenses, and Sporting de Braga, noted that the Blue Sharks’ lack of offensive output was a result of the immense physical toll of defending against Spain, combined with the “natural nerves” of a World Cup debut.

“The Cape Verdean people are used to this resilience,” he emphasized. “It is a small country, but it has a big heart. The national team proved that they are not just there to participate; they are there to compete.”

The Road Ahead

Cape Verde currently sits in a promising position in Group H. Their quest for the Round of 32 continues on Sunday as they face Uruguay, followed by a final group stage clash against Saudi Arabia on June 27.
