Portuguese Startups Eye Expansion at Web Summit Vancouver

Eight Portuguese startups have descended on Vancouver this week with a clear mission: to conquer the North American market. Taking center stage at Web Summit Vancouver, these innovators are part of a rapidly growing tech ecosystem that has seen participation surge nearly 30% over the previous year.

A Strategic Bridge to North America

The event, held from May 11 to 14 at the Vancouver Convention Centre, has drawn over 20,000 participants, 1,200 startups, and 800 investors. For the second consecutive year, Portugal is making its mark with a delegation coordinated by Startup Portugal and supported by the Lisbon City Council.

“We are very pleased with Web Summit Vancouver 2026,” Artur Pereira, Web Summit’s country manager for Portugal and Brazil, told Lusa. He noted that the delegation represents a diverse “interest group” hailing from Lisbon, Porto, and Leiria, accompanied by key figures like Lisbon’s Councilor for Economy and Innovation, Maria Luísa Aldino.

Solving Global Problems with Local Tech

The Portuguese contingent reflects the country’s multi-sector strength, spanning cybersecurity, sustainable energy, fintech, and artificial intelligence. Two startups in particular highlight the high-stakes solutions being exported:

  • Nitrogen Sensing Solutions: CEO Marise Almeida is introducing biosensors that monitor nitrogen compounds in water. “We intend to establish partnerships here in North America and achieve initial contact with investors,” Almeida said, noting the company’s global ambitions in the watertech sector.
  • CyberX – The Ethical Hacking Services: Specializing in ethical hacking and threat intelligence, CyberX aims to neutralize cyberattacks before they happen. CEO David Silva emphasized that their priority in Vancouver is internationalization rather than immediate funding, with a specific focus on the U.S., Canada, and the Middle East.

Why Vancouver?

While Portugal has maintained a presence at Canadian tech events for several years, the arrival of Web Summit in Vancouver has scaled the opportunity. Vancouver’s dominance in gaming, virtual reality, and special effects makes it an ideal landing pad for Portuguese tech.

“Portugal positions itself as a bridge between Canada and Europe,” explained André Faria, senior global relations manager at Startup Portugal. He noted that the eight companies were selected based on their maturity and ability to scale rapidly.

Inês Serrão of Unicorn Factory Lisbon added that Portugal serves as a “validation market” where startups can perfect their products before the high-stakes move to international expansion.

A Growing Global Stage

The scale of Web Summit Vancouver 2026 reflects a broader shift in the global tech landscape. With more than 100 countries represented, the summit hosts 32 government and trade delegations. Portugal stands alongside nations like Italy, South Korea, and Qatar, all vying for a foothold in the competitive North American tech corridor.
