Cape Verde Urges Study on Middle East Conflict Economic Impact

Cape Verde is calling for an urgent, in-depth study to assess how the ongoing conflict in the Middle East is impacting its national economy and social stability. The proposal was highlighted in the country’s Voluntary National Review (VNR) on the United Nations Agenda 2030 goals, released Monday during a high-level summit in New York.

Assessing Global Volatility

A Cape Verdean delegation, led by Minister of Environment, Climate Action, and Energy Carlos Varela, presented the report at the UN’s High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development. The document emphasizes that the archipelago’s heavy reliance on imports makes it particularly vulnerable to international market fluctuations caused by geopolitical instability.

According to the report, the proposed study must “analyze international prices” and their direct effect “on the cost of living for families.” The government argues that understanding these external shocks is vital for the archipelago to stay on track with the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

A Strategy for Resilience

While the report was initiated by the previous administration, it remains a cornerstone of the new executive’s strategy following the May elections. Beyond the Middle East crisis, the VNR outlines several critical next steps for the nation, including:

  • Demographic Analysis: Research to determine how Cape Verde can transform its changing population dynamics into economic and social gains.
  • Social Security Reform: A comprehensive review of the National Social Security Institute’s strategic plan, ensuring long-term sustainability in the face of shifting demographics.

A Global Model for Stability

Despite the challenges posed by its geographic limitations as a small island state, international observers remain optimistic about the country’s trajectory. Patrícia Portela, the UN representative in Cape Verde, praised the nation’s progress in a preface to the report.

“Cape Verde continues to stand out as a model of resilience, democratic stability, and strategic vision,” Portela stated. “Even in the face of resource limitations, the country is transforming structural challenges into opportunities to build more inclusive and sustainable development.”

As the forum continues through Friday, Cape Verde officials hope the findings will help secure the partnerships necessary to insulate the nation from global economic volatility while maintaining its status as a leader in democratic governance in Africa.
