Cape Verde President Pledges Support for Earthquake-Hit Venezuela
Cape Verdean President José Maria Neves has issued a formal expression of solidarity with the people and government of Venezuela following the devastating twin earthquakes that struck the South American nation on Wednesday.
A Message of Brotherhood
In a statement released via his official Facebook page, President Neves conveyed his “full solidarity and friendship” during what he described as a “great tragedy.” The Cape Verdean head of state emphasized that his government will remain vigilant and continue to monitor the humanitarian situation as it unfolds.
Rising Death Toll and International Response
The scale of the disaster is becoming increasingly clear as recovery efforts continue. According to the latest official reports, two powerful tremors—measuring magnitudes of 7.2 and 7.5—hit just 38 seconds apart. The catastrophe has claimed at least 589 lives and left 2,980 people injured.
The impact has been particularly severe in the capital, Caracas, and the coastal region of La Guaira, where dozens of buildings have either collapsed or suffered critical structural damage.
Luso-Descendant Community Impacted
The tragedy has resonated deeply within the Lusophone world. Officials confirmed that at least nine Portuguese citizens or individuals of Portuguese descent are among the dead. In response to the crisis, Portugal and seven other European Union member states have announced they are deploying specialized search and rescue teams to assist Venezuelan authorities in the race to find survivors beneath the rubble.
