Cape Verde Named African Capital of Culture for 2028

Cape Verde is set to take center stage as the soul of the continent after being officially designated the African Capital of Culture for 2028. The announcement marks a significant milestone for the archipelago, which is poised to host a two-year celebration of African creativity, heritage, and artistic excellence.

A Global Platform for Cape Verdean Culture

Prime Minister Ulisses Correia e Silva confirmed the designation following the signing of a formal protocol in Morocco. According to the Prime Minister, the country will host an extensive program of initiatives designed to showcase the best of the continent’s arts and cultural industries.

“The program aims to promote artistic exchange, value heritage, and drive sustainable urban development,” Correia e Silva stated. He framed the designation as a strategic move to consolidate culture as an “engine for growth and global affirmation.”

Culture as a Pillar of Development

The “African Capitals of Culture” initiative was established in 2018 during the Africities summit in Marrakech. It is managed by United Cities and Local Governments of Africa (UCLG Africa), an association representing 44 entities across the continent.

The project was born from the belief that culture should serve as the “fourth pillar” of sustainable development, standing alongside economic, social, and environmental goals. By being named the capital, Cape Verde will become a hub for reflection on public policies regarding the creative economy and the arts.

Looking Ahead to 2028

While the specific details of the schedule have yet to be released, the host city or country typically undergoes two consecutive years of high-profile events. For Cape Verde, this will mean a sustained period of international visibility, inviting performers, thinkers, and tourists from across the globe to experience its unique blend of African and Atlantic influences.

The 2028 celebration is expected to provide a major boost to the nation’s creative industries, reinforcing Cape Verde’s position as a cultural bridge between Africa and the rest of the world.
