Cape Verde Marks World Cup Debut with Coins and Stamps
Cape Verde is set to immortalize its historic first appearance in the FIFA World Cup with the release of a dedicated commemorative coin and postage stamp series, according to the archipelago’s Official Gazette.
The Cape Verdean government hailed the national team’s qualification for the 2026 tournament as “a historic achievement and a victory for the Cape Verdean people.” To celebrate the milestone, a regulatory decree has authorized the Bank of Cape Verde (BCV) to mint a special 200-escudo coin. The issue will be limited to 24,250 units, featuring both general circulation versions and high-quality finishes designed for collectors and numismatists.
Philatelic Tributes and Collectibles
In addition to the currency, a new philatelic collection titled “Cape Verde’s First Appearance in the Football World Cup – 2026” will enter circulation this coming Monday. The collection includes:
- 40 and 60 escudo stamps (40,000 copies each)
- A 200 escudo souvenir block (5,000 copies)
- A first-day cover valued at 400 escudos
The Blue Sharks’ Path to Glory
The “Blue Sharks” are preparing for a challenging debut on the world stage. Their campaign kicks off on June 15th against powerhouse Spain in Atlanta, USA. Cape Verde will also face Uruguay and Saudi Arabia as part of a competitive Group H.
The 2026 World Cup, hosted across North America from June 11 to July 19, marks the first time the tournament will feature an expanded field of 48 teams. Under the new format, the top two teams from each of the 12 groups, along with the eight best third-placed teams, will advance to the knockout rounds.
