Cape Verde Food Bank Launches 20th National Collection Drive
The Food Bank of Cape Verde is calling on citizens to help combat food insecurity as it launches its 20th national food collection campaign this weekend. The initiative will take place across approximately 50 mini-markets and shops in the major cities of Praia, Mindelo, and Espargos.
Stocking the Shelves for 6,000 Residents
Ana Maria Hopffer Almada, president of the Donana Foundation and the Food Bank, stated that the primary goal of the drive is to “stock the Food Bank’s warehouses” in the three participating cities. The timing is critical to ensure a steady supply of essentials for those in need.
Organizers aim to collect enough food to assemble roughly 1,000 basic food baskets. These baskets are distributed periodically to beneficiary families, directly supporting an estimated 6,000 individuals across the country.
A Proven Network of Support
The logistical heavy lifting will be managed by a network of 60 partner associations under the Donana Foundation and the Food Bank of Cape Verde. These organizations work year-round to ensure that donations reach the most vulnerable populations efficiently.
Since its inception in 2012, the Food Bank of Cape Verde has become a cornerstone of social support in the archipelago. Over the past 14 years, the organization has collected and distributed approximately 1,800 tons of food, providing a vital lifeline to thousands of Cape Verdeans.
