Azores & Cape Verde Concert: 50 Years of Freedom Celebration
In a powerful tribute to shared history and maritime heritage, approximately 60 artists from the Azores and Cape Verde will converge in the city of Praia on September 5 to celebrate a dual milestone: 50 years of Azorean autonomy and Cape Verdean independence.
A Transatlantic Musical Dialogue
The centerpiece of the celebration is the debut international performance of “Azores-Cape Verde Musical Encounter — 50 Years, Two Archipelagos, One Sea.” Organized by the Sociedade Recreativa Filarmónica Fundação Brasileira from the Azores, the show marks the first time this ambitious production will be staged outside of Portugal.
The 90-minute performance will take place at the National Assembly in Praia at 7:30 PM local time. Admission is free, inviting the public to witness a unique collaboration between the Fundação Brasileira Orchestra and a lineup of prominent Cape Verdean artists, including the renowned group Raiz di Polon, singer Jaime Goth, and various local dancers.
Celebrating Five Decades of Freedom
The event honors two pivotal historical moments: the 1975 proclamation of Cape Verdean independence and the 1976 establishment of Azorean autonomy. Under the banner “50 Years of Autonomy, 50 Years of Future: United by the Atlantic,” the program explores the cultural threads that bind these mid-Atlantic societies together.
The performance is structured into five thematic acts:
- The Calling of the Atlantic: An evocative opening that blends Azorean whaling songs with traditional Cape Verdean rhythms to honor the sea that separates and connects them.
- Roots and Memories: A musical dialogue featuring the iconic viola da terra and the cavaquinho, weaving together genres such as chamarrita, batuque, funaná, and tabanca.
- 50 Years of the Path: A historical journey featuring the original suite “Five Decades of Our Own Voice,” narrated alongside archival images documenting the two regions’ paths to self-governance.
- Human Bridges: A tribute to the diaspora, incorporating community testimonies and a vocal duet titled “Sea of Encounter” performed by voices from both archipelagos.
- Atlantic of the Future: A grand finale involving a full choir and orchestra, focusing on the blue economy, ocean sustainability, and the promise of the next generation.
Beyond the Stage
The cultural exchange extends beyond the concert hall. Members of the Fundação Brasileira will also lead a local volunteer mission and conduct specialized training sessions in Cape Verde. These initiatives aim to foster long-term cooperation and strengthen the diplomatic and artistic bonds between the two Atlantic neighbors.
