Portugal Airport Traffic Grows 2.5% Through July
Portuguese airports continue to see a steady climb in traveler traffic, with passenger numbers rising by 2.5% during the first seven months of the year, according to the latest data released by airport operator ANA and its parent company, Vinci.
The growth remained consistent through the peak of the summer season. In July alone, passenger volume at national airports saw a 2.1% uptick compared to the same period last year, reinforcing Portugal’s position as a resilient travel hub despite shifting global trends.
Global Trends: Winners and Losers
The report from Vinci highlights a diverse landscape for international travel through July. While Portugal maintained moderate growth, other regions saw double-digit surges. Costa Rica led the pack with an 11% increase in passengers, followed closely by Cape Verde at 10% and the Dominican Republic at 9.5%.
In Europe, Hungary and Serbia also outperformed the average, recording growth of 7.2% and 7% respectively. Brazil rounded out the positive performers with a 4.7% increase in airport traffic.
Major Markets See a Downturn
However, the growth was not universal. Several major global markets experienced significant declines in passenger numbers during the same period. The United States saw a sharp drop of 9.9%, while Cambodia followed closely with a 9.5% decrease.
Other notable declines occurred in Japan (-5.8%) and Chile (-2.5%). Even established European markets faced headwinds; passenger traffic dipped by 1.6% in France and 1.3% in the United Kingdom, suggesting a cooling of demand in some of the world’s busiest aviation sectors.
