Argentina Edges Cape Verde 3-2: Messi & Scaloni Post-Match Reaction
Argentina narrowly avoided a massive upset in Miami Gardens on Friday, scraping past a resilient Cape Verde side with a 3-2 victory after extra time. The hard-fought win propels the defending champions into the World Cup quarter-finals, but the narrow margin served as a stark wake-up call for the tournament favorites.
Scaloni: ‘Nothing is Easy for Argentina’
Marking his 100th game in charge of the national team, Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni was quick to praise his opponents while acknowledging the physical toll the match took on his squad. “It was an extremely tough game, but this team never gives up,” Scaloni said. “I said beforehand it would be difficult, and Cape Verde showed they are a great team.”
Reflecting on his milestone, Scaloni added, “It would have been crazy to lose my 100th game like this, but that’s football. Argentines know that nothing is easy for us.”
Messi Warns of a ‘Special’ World Cup
Lionel Messi, who opened the scoring for the Albiceleste, warned that the gap between football’s traditional powers and emerging nations is closing. “People often disparage teams because of their names, but we knew better. This World Cup is special because everything is so evenly matched,” Messi noted.
The captain admitted that Argentina struggled after taking the lead. “We did the hardest part by finding the first goal, but then we lost the ball, sat back, and couldn’t press well. We suffered a lot of physical wear and need to analyze what went wrong over those 120 minutes.”
Martínez: Proud but Frustrated
Lisandro Martínez, who proved vital with both a goal and an assist, echoed the sentiment of resilience. “We fought until the end. You can’t rely on perceived ease in knockout rounds. I’m proud of our energy, but as a defender, I’m unhappy about conceding two goals.”
Cape Verde Leaves with Heads High
Despite the heartbreak, Cape Verde coach Bubista radiated pride. The Blue Sharks managed to equalize twice against the world champions, forcing the match into extra time before eventually falling to a set-piece goal.
“I am incredibly proud. We dignified our country today,” Bubista said. “We played the world champions and showed our character and identity. It was a shame to lose on a set piece, but we proved what we are capable of.”
Midfielder Yannick Semedo shared that pride, describing the experience of facing Argentina as “inexplicable.” He concluded, “We gave our all. We leave here with our heads held high.”
