Argentina and Colombia Eye World Cup Quarter-final Spots

Defending world champions Argentina and South American powerhouses Colombia are the heavy favorites to secure the final two spots in the 2026 World Cup quarter-finals as the Round of 16 reaches its conclusion today.

Argentina Chases History Against Underdogs Egypt

Argentina, hunting for a historic fourth title, faces an Egyptian side that has not reached this stage of the competition since 1934. Should the Albiceleste go all the way, they would become the first team to successfully defend the trophy since Brazil’s legendary back-to-back wins in 1958 and 1962.

Lionel Scaloni’s side is coming off a grueling Round of 32 encounter against Cape Verde. It took extra time to secure a 3-2 victory in a match that also marked Scaloni’s 100th game at the helm. Argentina’s primary threat remains Lionel Messi, who enters the match in scintillating form. The veteran superstar has scored seven goals in the tournament so far and is currently on an unprecedented streak of scoring in eight consecutive World Cup matches dating back to Qatar 2022.

Egypt also endured a marathon path to the Round of 16. The Pharaohs survived a penalty shootout (4-2) against Australia after a 1-1 draw over 120 minutes. They will look to Emam Ashour to help pull off one of the biggest upsets in tournament history when the two sides meet in Atlanta.

Colombia and Switzerland Battle for Quarter-final Return

In the day’s other matchup, Colombia looks to replicate their historic 2014 run by reaching the quarter-finals for only the second time. The Cafeteros have been impressive throughout the tournament, winning Group K ahead of Portugal before edging out Carlos Queiroz’s Ghana 1-0 in the previous round thanks to an early strike from Jhon Arias.

Standing in their way is Switzerland, a team searching for its first quarter-final appearance in over 70 years. While the Swiss reached the final eight in 1954, they have struggled to break through that barrier in the modern era. However, they shouldn’t be underestimated; they topped Group B and professionally dispatched Algeria 2-0 in the Round of 32 with goals from Breel Embolo and Dan Ndoye.

What’s at Stake

The stakes are high for both matches, as the two winners are scheduled to face off against each other in the quarter-finals this Saturday in Kansas City.

Today’s Schedule:

  • Argentina vs. Egypt: 12:00 local time (17:00 GMT/Lisbon) – Atlanta, USA
  • Colombia vs. Switzerland: 13:00 local time (21:00 GMT/Lisbon) – Vancouver, Canada
