Betinho Leaves Benfica: End of a Basketball Era at Luz

Benfica basketball legend Betinho is bidding farewell to Lisbon. The club announced today that the Portuguese-Cape Verdean international forward is leaving the “Eagles” after a storied career that spanned a decade and yielded an incredible 17 trophies.

The End of an Era

“It is a shame that this moment has arrived; I tried to postpone it for a long time, but that is how it is,” said the 41-year-old veteran in an interview on Benfica’s official website. “Life is made of cycles, and I am moving forward.”

Betinho represented the “Reds” across two distinct periods: an initial three-year stint from 2011 to 2014, followed by a dominant seven-season run beginning in 2019. In total, he suited up for Benfica in more than 400 games, cementing his status as one of the most reliable and influential figures in the locker room.

A Legacy of Titles

During his time at the Luz, Betinho became a serial winner. His second stint was particularly prolific, contributing to four consecutive national championships. His total trophy haul with Benfica includes:

  • 7 National Championships
  • 2 Portuguese Cups
  • 4 Portuguese Super Cups
  • 1 Hugo dos Santos Cup
  • 3 António Pratas Trophies

A Historic Journey

Reflecting on his departure, Betinho—who has the rare distinction of having represented the national teams of both Portugal and Cape Verde—expressed gratitude for his time with the club. “It never crossed my mind that one day I would be at a club like Benfica, winning so many titles and being part of the history of this institution,” he said.

While the forward has not yet officially confirmed his next move or a potential retirement, his exit marks the conclusion of one of the most successful individual chapters in Portuguese club basketball history.
