Angola Hails Cape Verde Independence & World Cup Success
Angolan President João Lourenço extended his congratulations to Cape Verde on Sunday, marking the island nation’s 51st anniversary of independence with a tribute to its rapid development and historic sporting achievements.
A Half-Century of Progress
In an official message to Cape Verdean President José Maria Neves, Lourenço praised the country’s trajectory since it gained independence in 1975. The Angolan leader emphasized that Cape Verde has navigated an “exemplary journey” over the past five decades, noting significant milestones across the economic, social, and cultural sectors.
“We rejoice in the significant achievements of Cape Verde attained in these five decades,” Lourenço wrote. “These accomplishments deserve our deepest appreciation.”
World Cup Glory Under the Spotlight
Beyond political milestones, President Lourenço specifically lauded the Cape Verdean national football team for their standout performance at the FIFA World Cup. He commended the “dignified manner” in which the athletes represented not only their home nation but the entire African continent on the world stage, elevating the country’s profile in international sports.
Strengthening Bilateral Ties
The message also focused on the enduring partnership between Luanda and Praia. Lourenço described the friendship between the two peoples as “sincere, deep, and solid,” framing these historical ties as the bedrock for future growth.
Currently, Angola and Cape Verde maintain what Lourenço termed “very fruitful” cooperation. However, the Angolan President signaled a desire to go further, expressing a commitment to “expand and deepen” bilateral relations to better leverage the economic capacities of both nations.
Closing his message, Lourenço offered his best wishes for the health and well-being of President Neves and continued prosperity for the Cape Verdean people.
