Cape Verde Heroes: World Cup Stars Return for Independence Day
PRAIA, Cape Verde – The 51st anniversary of Cape Verde’s independence was transformed into a massive national victory parade on Sunday as thousands gathered in the capital to welcome home the “Blue Sharks” (Tubarões Azuis) following their historic debut at the 2026 World Cup.
The national team returned from the United States to a hero’s welcome at Nelson Mandela International Airport. Fans draped in the national colors of blue, white, and red lined the tarmac and surrounding streets, eager to catch a glimpse of the squad that captured the world’s attention by pushing defending champions Argentina to the absolute limit.
A “Giant-Killing” Debut
Cape Verde’s first-ever World Cup appearance exceeded all expectations. After remaining undefeated in the group stage with draws against footballing powerhouses Spain (0-0) and Uruguay (2-2), as well as Saudi Arabia (0-0), the island nation advanced to the Round of 32. On Friday, they nearly pulled off the upset of the tournament, taking Argentina into extra time before eventually falling 3-2 in a narrow, hard-fought defeat.
“Against Argentina, we showed will, quality, and resilience,” said head coach Bubista. “The team proved how much it has grown and that we didn’t qualify by chance—this was the result of immense hard work.”
Celebrations of Freedom and Football
The timing of the team’s return on July 5, Cape Verde’s Independence Day, added a profound layer of emotion to the festivities. Bubista paid tribute to the nation’s history, congratulating “those who fought for independence” and expressing pride in representing a free nation on the global stage.
Star players were mobbed by fans as they exited the plane. Goalkeeper Vozinha, a standout performer throughout the tournament, was among the most sought-after for autographs. Midfielder Kevin Pina, who earned Player of the Match honors against Uruguay, struggled to describe the reception. “As we say in Creole, the happiness is so much it doesn’t fit in the chest,” Pina said. “Now it’s time to enjoy this moment with our people.”
Inspiring the Future
For the players, the tournament was about more than just scores; it was about changing the perception of Cape Verdean football. Defender Pico Lopes of Shamrock Rovers noted that the performance would “inspire future generations,” while Sidny Lopes Cabral described the sensation of scoring against Argentina as “indescribable.”
The celebrations are set to continue late into the night. After leaving the airport, the team began a victory tour through the neighborhoods and avenues of Praia, culminating in a massive festival at Quebra Canela square—the same spot where thousands had gathered to watch the matches on giant screens.
The impact of the “Blue Sharks” has been so significant that Prime Minister Francisco Carvalho has proposed designating July 3—the day of the match against Argentina—as “Blue Sharks Day.” The holiday would serve to honor the team’s values of unity and national pride, ensuring that the summer of 2026 remains a permanent fixture in the nation’s history.
