Cape Verde and Angola Mourn Timor-Leste’s ‘Lu Olo’

Leaders from the Lusophone world are mourning the passing of former Timor-Leste President Francisco Guterres, widely known as “Lu Olo,” who died Sunday at the age of 71. Cape Verde and Angola have led international tributes, honoring the statesman as a pivotal architect of Timorese independence and democracy.

A Legacy of Independence

Lu Olo, who passed away in a Malaysian hospital, served as the President of Timor-Leste from 2017 to 2022. His influence on the nation’s history, however, stretched back decades. As the former president of the Constituent Assembly, he was the man who officially proclaimed the restoration of Timor-Leste’s independence on May 20, 2002—a defining moment that ended decades of Indonesian occupation.

In a letter to current Timorese President José Ramos-Horta, Cape Verdean President José Maria Neves expressed “great consternation” at the news. Neves hailed Lu Olo as an “essential figure” and a tireless “defender of reconciliation, peace, and sustainable development.”

Tributes from the CPLP Community

The Angolan Embassy in Dili echoed these sentiments, highlighting the deep ties between the two nations within the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP). Angolan Ambassador José Andrade de Lemos described Lu Olo’s life as a “testament to courage, dedication, and commitment to freedom.”

“May his memory and legacy inspire new generations and strengthen the ideals of peace, justice, and development in Timor-Leste,” the Ambassador wrote.

Final Farewells

Before ascending to the presidency, Lu Olo held several high-ranking roles, including president of the National Parliament and leader of the Revolutionary Front for an Independent East Timor (Fretilin). It was in his role as head of the Constituent Assembly that he famously swore in the nation’s first president, Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão.

The fallen leader’s wake began Monday at his private residence and concludes today. Timor-Leste will bid a final farewell to the independence hero during funeral ceremonies scheduled for Friday.
