World Cup 2026: Cape Verde Set to Attack Uruguay in Group H
After a stunning defensive display that held global powerhouse Spain to a scoreless draw, Cape Verde is ready to turn up the heat. Head coach Bubista says his team will approach their second 2026 World Cup Group H clash against Uruguay with “courage, organization, and zero fear,” but with a renewed focus on offensive firepower.
Sharpening the Attack
Reflecting on the opening match that earned the Blue Sharks international acclaim, Pedro Leitão Brito—widely known as Bubista—is ready to move beyond just being hard to beat. Speaking at a packed press conference in Miami, the coach emphasized that while the team was defensively “solid” against Spain, they must now find their rhythm in the final third.
“Our goal is to compete with dignity and bravery,” Bubista told reporters. “We know the quality of our opponents, but we trust in our preparation. We want to improve our way of attacking and do everything possible to secure qualification for the next stage.”
A Tactical Battle Against a Legend
The match offers a special personal milestone for Bubista, who will go head-to-head with Uruguay’s legendary manager, Marcelo Bielsa. The Cape Verdean coach expressed deep admiration for the Argentine tactician, calling him a source of inspiration.
“He is an example for us,” Bubista noted. “Bielsa is someone who has done so much for football throughout his career. It is a pleasure and an honor to face him and shake his hand on this stage.”
The Spirit of a Nation
Despite being one of the smallest nations in the tournament, Bubista believes Cape Verde’s resilience is their secret weapon. “We are a small country with a big heart,” he explained. “We have shown the courage of our people—to have unity and fight for difficult things so they do not become impossible.”
Winger Garry Rodrigues, who is expected to play a larger role after missing the opening draw, echoed his coach’s optimism. The Apollon Limassol star admitted the result against Spain surprised many, but insisted the team’s focus is now purely on Uruguay.
The match also serves as a sentimental reunion for Rodrigues, who will face former Galatasaray teammate and legendary Uruguayan goalkeeper Fernando Muslera. “He is a legend and a friend,” Rodrigues said. “I never imagined I would play against Muslera while representing my country, but that dream has come true.”
Group H: All to Play For
Group H remains wide open heading into the second round. After two draws in the opening fixtures, Uruguay, Saudi Arabia, Spain, and Cape Verde all sit level with one point each.
The Blue Sharks take on Uruguay at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens tonight at 23:00 (Lisbon time), following the matchup between Spain and Saudi Arabia in Atlanta.
