Hantavirus Alert: UK Travelers Isolated After Cruise Outbreak

Two British travelers who returned from a cruise ship currently grappling with a hantavirus outbreak have been ordered into self-isolation, the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) confirmed today.

The individuals were passengers aboard the MV Hondius, a vessel that has become the center of a health alert. Although they returned to the UK independently and are currently showing no symptoms of the virus, health officials are taking no risks.

“They are receiving guidance and support from the UKHSA and have been directed to self-isolate,” the agency stated in a press release issued on Monday.

The Situation Aboard the MV Hondius

The MV Hondius is currently carrying 144 asymptomatic passengers and crew. As of Monday evening, the ship was off the coast of Cape Verde, steaming toward the Canary Islands. Spanish authorities in Madrid expect the vessel to dock on Saturday.

The Spanish Ministry of the Interior has announced that a full-scale evacuation and repatriation effort will begin on Monday. “All passengers will remain on the cruise ship until the arrival of the aircraft that will repatriate them to their countries of origin,” ministry sources confirmed.

Domestic Precautions and Close Contacts

In addition to the two returned travelers, the UKHSA is monitoring a “small number” of people identified as close contacts. These individuals are also asymptomatic but have been instructed to self-isolate as a precautionary measure. Despite these actions, health officials emphasized that the “risk to the general population remains very low.”

The agency also confirmed that a British citizen is among three patients suspected of contracting hantavirus who were previously evacuated from the ship. Those individuals are currently receiving specialized medical treatment in the Netherlands, and the UKHSA remains in close contact with their medical teams.

Monitoring Remaining Passengers

There are still British nationals aboard the MV Hondius. While none are currently displaying symptoms, they are being closely monitored by on-board medical staff. The UKHSA indicated that these citizens may be repatriated once the ship reaches the Canary Islands, provided they remain symptom-free.

Hantaviruses are a family of viruses spread mainly by rodents and can cause varied disease syndromes in people worldwide. While serious, human-to-human transmission is considered rare, leading to the strict isolation protocols currently being enforced for those exposed on the vessel.
