Braga vs Freiburg: Cafú Backs Arsenalistas for Europa Final

Sporting de Braga stands on the precipice of European glory, and former striker Cafú believes they have exactly what it takes to weather the storm in Germany. As the “Arsenalistas” prepare to defend a narrow lead in the Europa League semifinals, Cafú—the only Portuguese footballer to have ever worn the Freiburg jersey—insists his former club’s pressure won’t be enough to break Braga’s resolve.

Following a dramatic 2-1 first-leg victory in Minho, secured by a stoppage-time strike from Mario Dorgeles, Braga heads to the Europa-Park Stadion on Thursday with a ticket to the final in their sights. “Braga is very close to reaching the final, and there is no better motivation for players and staff,” Cafú told Lusa. “They will give it their all against an accessible team.”

Surviving the ‘First 15 Minutes’

For Cafú, the blueprint for success is simple: survival followed by clinical expansion. “The secret is to withstand the first 10 to 15 minutes. Freiburg will come out swinging and expose themselves, and Braga must take advantage of those openings,” the 48-year-old explained. “It will be complicated in front of a home crowd, but Braga is strong and confident. They are experiencing a moment they won’t forget.”

Braga’s task may be complicated by the fitness of captain Ricardo Horta, who remains doubtful with a thigh injury. However, Cafú remains unfazed by the potential absence of the talismanic leader. “Ricardo is extremely important, but the team has solutions. Braga is very strong as a collective right now, and that is their greatest advantage. His absence won’t undermine their confidence.”

The Freiburg Evolution

While Braga is chasing its first European final since 2011, Freiburg is in uncharted territory. The German side had never progressed this far in seven previous European campaigns. Cafú, who played for the club during the 2006/07 season, has watched their transformation with admiration.

“Freiburg is growing. They have a new stadium and excellent facilities,” he noted. “In my time, they were a ‘yo-yo’ club, but now they compete with the top teams in the country. In Germany, the project is cultivated much more than immediate results.”

Under coach Julian Schuster, Freiburg has maintained its seventh-place standing in the Bundesliga and reached the German Cup semifinals. They represent a model of stability, but Cafú believes that on Thursday, the psychological edge belongs to the Portuguese side.

A Path to Istanbul

If Braga holds their nerve, they will reach the final on May 20 in Istanbul, Turkey. They are currently the only Portuguese team left in European competition this season. A potential “all-Portuguese” coaching final looms, as Vítor Pereira’s Nottingham Forest holds a 1-0 lead over Aston Villa in the other semifinal bracket.

“Teams train well and have great conditions; what matters now is the mental part—who wants it more,” Cafú concluded. “Braga will find a tough, intense environment, but they just need to be themselves.”
