From a major drug bust in Setúbal to an international research initiative in Oeiras, here is a breakdown of the latest headlines from across Portugal.

Oeiras Invests in International Science Talent

Thirteen researchers from around the globe are set to receive BRIDGE doctoral scholarships to advance scientific innovation in the municipality of Oeiras. The recipients—hailing from India, Pakistan, the United Kingdom, and Portugal—work within the António Xavier Institute of Chemical and Biological Technology (ITQB NOVA).

The research projects tackle a diverse array of global challenges, including the development of heat-resistant rice, carbon dioxide capture via bioreactors, and new strategies to combat lymphoma and atopic dermatitis. Mayor Isaltino Morais and ITQB NOVA Director João Crespo will officially present the eight-month scholarship program this Wednesday at Parque dos Poetas. The initiative is designed to both attract and retain world-class scientific talent in the Lisbon district.

Major Drug Bust in Setúbal: 53kg of Hashish Seized

Two suspects are in custody following a significant drug seizure by the Setúbal Public Security Police (PSP). Officers intercepted three individuals—two men and one woman—as they prepared to distribute a massive haul of narcotics throughout the city.

The operation, supported by the Portimão PSP, netted 53 kilograms of hashish (equivalent to nearly 107,000 doses) and 442 grams of marijuana. Beyond the drugs, police seized a revolver, a modified shotgun, 51 rounds of ammunition, and €40,000 in cash. While two suspects have been placed in pre-trial detention, a third has been released under strict orders to maintain no contact with the other members of the group.

Community groups in Almada have until May 19 to apply for the first phase of public support grants. The Almada City Council has allocated a total of €274,679 for 2026 to bolster local infrastructure, equipment, and community events.

Eligible associations can apply for up to €25,000 for construction projects, €20,000 for specific events, and €10,000 for equipment upgrades or vehicle acquisitions. A second round of applications will open in September. The council aims to use these funds to strengthen the social fabric of the Setúbal district by empowering local non-profits.

Madeira Banana Production Slumps After Harsh Weather

Madeira’s iconic banana industry faced a difficult start to 2026, with marketing volumes dropping 25% in the first quarter compared to the previous year. Data from the Regional Directorate of Agriculture reveals that 3,295 tons were marketed, a decrease of over 1,000 tons attributed to recent severe weather in the region.

Despite the downturn, export remains the backbone of the industry, with nearly 73% of the crop sent to mainland Portugal. While February saw a sharp 33.9% decline, March showed signs of stabilization, recording the highest volume of the quarter.
