World Cup 2026: Maxi Araújo Goal Rescues Uruguay Draw
Sporting CP winger Maxi Araújo emerged as the hero for Uruguay on Monday, scoring a dramatic late equalizer to secure a 1-1 draw against Saudi Arabia in their 2026 FIFA World Cup opener.
Late Drama in Miami Gardens
In a tightly contested Group H clash at Miami Gardens, Saudi Arabia appeared on the verge of an upset. The Green Falcons took the lead in the 41st minute when Abdulelah Al-Amri found the back of the net, punishing the Uruguayan defense and silencing the South American supporters.
Uruguay struggled to find their rhythm for much of the match, but their persistence finally paid off in the 80th minute. Araújo, who plies his trade for Portuguese giants Sporting CP, clinicaly restored parity with a well-timed strike. In a tactical twist, the goal proved to be his final contribution of the game; he was substituted immediately following the celebration as manager Marcelo Bielsa looked for fresh legs to find a winner.
Deadlock in Group H
The result leaves Group H in a literal four-way tie. Earlier in the day, reigning European champions Spain played out a surprise draw against tournament debutants Cape Verde in Atlanta. Consequently, all four teams sit level with one point each after the opening round of fixtures, setting the stage for a high-stakes second round as the race for the knockout stages heats up.
