World Cup 2026: Cape Verde Captain on Spain Debut Challenge

The Cape Verde national football team is preparing for a historic milestone as they make their World Cup debut today against global powerhouse Spain. As the “Blue Sharks” ready themselves for the Group H clash in Atlanta, captain Ryan Mendes weighed in on the absence of Spanish wunderkind Lamine Yamal, while emphasizing the monumental task ahead.

Spain Remains Formidable Despite Yamal’s Injury

Barcelona’s teenage sensation Lamine Yamal will miss the encounter as he continues to recover from an injury. While Mendes, who plays his club football for Turkish side Igdir, acknowledged that Yamal’s absence is a blow to the Spanish side, he refuses to underestimate the 2010 champions.

“Spain is stronger with Lamine than without him,” Mendes told reporters during the pre-match press conference. “But whoever steps in for him will certainly create problems for Cape Verde. We have to focus on ourselves, look for spaces, and capitalize on every opportunity we get.”

While the football world has been buzzing about Yamal’s potential to dominate the tournament, Mendes remained focused on the broader talent pool. “I don’t know if this will be Lamine’s World Cup, but there are other exceptional players across many national teams that we must account for,” he added.

A Historic Debut for the Blue Sharks

The match marks Cape Verde’s first-ever appearance on football’s grandest stage. For the 36-year-old winger, leading his country into the tournament is the pinnacle of his professional career.

“I am extremely proud to be here. There is no better stage than a World Cup,” Mendes said, reflecting on his call-up. “It is a special moment, and I feel very lucky to represent our people at this level.”

Collective Spirit: Cape Verde’s Secret Weapon

Facing one of the world’s elite teams, Mendes believes Cape Verde’s strength lies in their unity rather than individual stardom. He credited the team’s “collective spirit” as the driving force behind their successful qualification campaign.

“If we are here today, it is because of the bond that unites us,” the captain concluded. “We represent Cape Verde and its people. We must do everything together, as we always have, to get the best result possible.”

The match is scheduled to kick off today at 17:00 Lisbon time in Atlanta. The 2026 World Cup is the largest in history, featuring 48 teams competing across the United States, Mexico, and Canada through July 19.
