Spain’s 2026 World Cup Squad: Zero Real Madrid Players

Spain head coach Luis de la Fuente has unveiled his 26-man squad for the 2026 World Cup, sparking immediate debate by naming eight FC Barcelona stars while completely excluding players from Real Madrid. The decision marks a historic shift in the national team’s composition as “La Roja” prepares to defend its status as the world’s premier footballing force following their Euro 2024 triumph.

Barcelona Dominance and a Real Madrid Snub

Fresh off back-to-back La Liga titles, FC Barcelona forms the spine of the national side. The roster is headlined by 18-year-old sensation Lamine Yamal and midfield maestro Pedri. Despite Yamal currently nursing a thigh injury, he remains the focal point of the Spanish attack. He is joined by fellow Barça teammates Dani Olmo, Ferran Torres, Gavi, Pau Cubarsi, Eric Garcia, and goalkeeper Joan Garcia.

The total absence of Real Madrid players is the most striking feature of De la Fuente’s selection, signaling a total reliance on the tactical chemistry developed in Catalonia and among Spanish stars playing abroad.

A Midfield of Champions

Spain enters the tournament with what many consider the strongest midfield in world football. Pedri is expected to pull the strings alongside 2024 Ballon d’Or winner Rodri of Manchester City. The squad also benefits from the “Arsenal connection,” featuring Martin Zubimendi and Mikel Merino, who recently secured the English Premier League title with the Gunners. Fabian Ruiz, a key figure in Paris Saint-Germain’s French title run, adds further depth to the engine room.

The Road to Gold

The 2010 world champions have been drawn into Group H for the expanded 48-team tournament. They will face Saudi Arabia, Cape Verde, and Uruguay. The competition kicks off on June 11 and will be hosted across Canada, the United States, and Mexico, with the final scheduled for July 19.
