Portugal Pledges €100M for Economic Growth in Cape Verde
Portugal will launch a €100 million credit line to bolster investment in Cape Verde, Portuguese President António José Seguro announced on Monday. The initiative aims to support Portuguese companies looking to expand their operations within the archipelago, marking a significant step in deepening economic ties between the two nations.
Strengthening Economic Bonds
The announcement came following a high-level meeting at the Presidential Palace in Praia between President Seguro and Cape Verdean President José Maria Neves. The credit line, currently being finalized by the administration of Prime Minister Luís Montenegro, is in the “final technical stages” of development.
“It is good news that seals the excellent relationship between Cape Verde and Portugal,” Seguro stated during a joint press conference. President Neves echoed this sentiment, describing the financial commitment as a “significant milestone” that will allow both countries to “reach new heights” in cooperation across health, education, and the economy.
A Partnership Beyond Numbers
While the credit line provides a tangible financial boost, both leaders emphasized the intangible strength of their bilateral bond. President Neves highlighted critical collaboration in healthcare, such as life-saving medical transfers, and shared cultural celebrations, including Cape Verde’s recent success in the 2026 World Cup.
“Friendship cannot be quantified,” Seguro added, “and it is what endures.”
The visiting president suggested that future cooperation should move into more specialized sectors, specifically pointing toward ocean management and emerging technologies as key areas for growth.
High-Level Recognition and Future Engagements
In a symbolic gesture of mutual respect, the two leaders exchanged prestigious honors. President Neves became the first head of state to receive Portugal’s Grand Collar of the Order of Camões, recognized for his efforts in promoting the Portuguese language and bilateral cooperation. In return, President Seguro was awarded the First Degree decoration of the Order of Amílcar Cabral, Cape Verde’s highest distinction.
Adding a lighthearted touch to the state visit, Seguro presented Neves with a ceramic “Blue Shark,” a nod to the Cape Verdean national football team’s visibility during the 2026 World Cup.
Looking Ahead: The Blue Economy
The state visit, which concludes on Thursday, maintains a heavy focus on the maritime economy. A dedicated Cape Verde-Portugal economic forum will take place on Wednesday at the central bank. The trip will culminate on the island of Boa Vista, where President Seguro will open the V International Conference of the Decade of the Ocean, focusing on sustainable paths for the “Blue Economy.”
