Portugal Funds 8 Key Community Projects in Cape Verde
The Portuguese Embassy in Cape Verde has announced the eight winners of the 2026 Small Projects Fund (FPP), a flagship initiative designed to fuel community-led development across the archipelago. The selected projects represent a diverse range of interventions, from high-tech digital learning centers to mobile libraries and specialized healthcare.
Targeting Critical Social Needs
This year’s edition of the FPP focuses on five key pillars: training and employability, education, health, social and educational inclusion, and social reintegration. Managed by the Portuguese Cooperation Center and funded by Camões — Institute for Cooperation and Language, I.P., the fund provides grants of up to €10,000 for short-term projects that deliver immediate local impact.
The selected initiatives will be implemented across five islands: Santo Antão, Santiago, São Vicente, São Nicolau, and Sal.
Empowering the Next Generation
Youth development and inclusion are central themes among the 2026 beneficiaries. Notable projects include:
- Porto Novo Academic Association: Focused on vocational training to bridge the gap between education and the labor market.
- Acael Association: The creation of a digital learning room in the Eugénio Lima neighborhood to foster technological literacy.
- Maracanã Cultural and Sports Association: The “Blue Sharks Club,” which utilizes sports as a vehicle for social inclusion.
- Morabi: A community media library dedicated to supporting vulnerable children and young people.
Specialized Care and Social Innovation
The funding also addresses specific healthcare and reintegration challenges. The Cape Verdean Association of the Disabled will launch a “youth orthotics and prosthetics academy,” while Caritas Mindelo will implement an ophthalmology consultation project to improve eye health services.
Other vital projects include a mobile library operated by the Umaniza Association and a social reintegration program led by the Garah Foundation. By supporting these grassroots civil society organizations, the Portuguese Embassy aims to provide targeted, sustainable solutions to the most pressing needs of Cape Verdean communities.
