Pedro Pires to Lead José Maria Neves’ Re-Election Campaign

Former Cape Verdean President and legendary independence fighter Pedro Pires has been named chairman of the honor committee for José Maria Neves’ re-election bid. The announcement, made Wednesday in Praia, solidifies high-level support for the incumbent ahead of the national elections on November 15.

A ‘Credible’ Leader for Uncertain Times

In a formal statement of support, the committee emphasized the need for stability and seasoned leadership. “In a world marked by profound uncertainties, Cape Verde needs an experienced President of the Republic who is close to the citizens and capable of representing the country with dignity and credibility,” the statement read.

The honor committee boasts a prestigious roster of approximately 100 prominent figures. Among the subscribers are independence icons, including Ana Maria Cabral, widow of the nation’s founder Amílcar Cabral. The list also features international diplomat Carlos Lopes, former UN Under-Secretary-General, and a group of celebrated artists including Mário Lúcio, Dino D’Santiago, and Mayra Andrade.

A Legacy of Leadership

José Maria Neves is no stranger to the upper echelons of Cape Verdean politics. Before his presidency, he served three terms as Prime Minister between 2001 and 2016 while leading the African Party for the Independence of Cape Verde (PAICV). The PAICV has already formally endorsed his current campaign.

Neves secured the presidency in 2021 with a decisive first-round victory, capturing 51.8% of the vote. He defeated Carlos Veiga, a former Prime Minister and founder of the Movement for Democracy (MpD), who garnered 42.4%.

The Road to November 15

While Neves enters the race with significant institutional backing, he faces a crowded field. His challengers include former Justice Minister Joana Rosa, who carries the support of the MpD, as well as physician Gilson Alves, jurist Casimiro Pina, judge Antero Tavares, and educator Loisito Sousa.

As the November 15 election approaches, the presence of Pedro Pires at the helm of Neves’ committee signals a powerful bridge between Cape Verde’s revolutionary history and its contemporary political future.
