October 26: Birth of Football and Moon Water Discovery

October 26 marks School Library Day, a date that celebrates literacy and the preservation of knowledge. Throughout history, this day has been a witness to the birth of global sports, the fall of regimes, and pivotal breakthroughs in science and peace.

Milestones in History and Politics

In 1774, the First Continental Congress met in Philadelphia, laying the groundwork for what would become the United States. Nearly a century later, in 1863, the Football Association (FA) was founded in London, establishing the first formal rules for the world’s most popular sport. In 1911, Chinese nationalists proclaimed the Republic of China, ending centuries of imperial rule.

The late 20th century saw significant diplomatic shifts. In 1973, the UN recognized the independence of Guinea-Bissau and Cape Verde. In a historic moment for the Middle East in 1994, Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin and Jordanian Prime Minister Abdel Salam Majali signed a peace treaty, ending 46 years of official conflict.

Portuguese Heritage and Governance

Portugal has seen several defining moments on this date. In 1823, a conspiracy by Prince Miguel and Queen Carlota Joaquina failed to topple King João VI. Decades later, in 1969, the “Liberal Wing”—including future leaders like Sá Carneiro and Pinto Balsemão—emerged following legislative elections under the dictatorial regime.

More recently, in 2006, Portugal finalized a $950 million deal with Mozambique for the Cahora Bassa Hydroelectric plant. Politically, October 26 has been a day for new beginnings: in both 2009 and 2019, new constitutional governments led by José Sócrates and António Costa, respectively, were sworn into office.

Science and the Arts

The world of music celebrates the birth of Italian composer Domenico Scarlatti (1685), while the art world remembers the death of famed Portuguese painter José Malhoa (1933). In science, 1957 marked the passing of Nobel laureate Gerty Cori, the first woman to win the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. More recently, in 2020, NASA made the groundbreaking announcement that water molecules had been discovered on the sunlit surface of the Moon.

Passings

We remember influential figures who passed away on this day, including Marcello Caetano (1980), the last leader of Portugal’s Estado Novo; acclaimed writer José Cardoso Pires (1998); and Brazilian soap opera visionary Gilberto Braga (2021).

Today’s Reflection

“Wherever there is exploitation of man, there she is, death, disguised as common and natural… an imperialist display of pride and power.” — José Cardoso Pires (1925–1998)

October 26 is the 299th day of the year, with 66 days remaining until the end of 2026.
