Tábua Launches ‘Tábua de Igualdades’ for Social Diversity
The municipality of Tábua has launched the seventh edition of its “Tábua de Igualdades” (Tábua of Equalities) initiative, an month-long program designed to champion inclusion, diversity, and social justice. Running from late October through November 25—the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women—the event aims to turn conversation into concrete social change.
A Community-Wide Commitment to Equality
This year’s theme, “From Awareness to Action: Equality Cannot Be Postponed,” reflects the municipality’s drive to move beyond rhetoric. The program includes a series of conferences, educational workshops in schools, and targeted outreach at private social solidarity institutions (IPSS).
António Oliveira, Vice-President of the Tábua City Council, told Lusa news agency that the initiative is a collaborative effort. Through the Local Social Action Council (CLAS), local partners have united to host events focused on human rights, violence prevention, and gender equality.
Celebrating Multiculturalism
Tábua may be a small municipality of 11,500 residents, but it boasts a surprisingly global profile. Oliveira revealed that approximately 1,500 residents are foreign nationals representing over 30 different countries. Many of these newcomers are local investors and business owners.
“We have very active participation from this foreign community,” Oliveira stated, emphasizing that fostering an inclusive environment is essential for the town’s social and economic health. To celebrate this diversity, the program features a multicultural festival highlighting traditional crafts, music, and games.
A centerpiece of the festivities is the “Flavors of the World” event, which invites the public to sample culinary traditions from Portugal, Cape Verde, and Mexico, reflecting the diverse backgrounds of the town’s current residents.
Award-Winning Governance
Tábua’s efforts have not gone unnoticed on the national stage. The municipality was recently honored for the fourth consecutive time with the “Living in Equality” prize. This biennial award, presented by the Commission for Citizenship and Gender Equality (CIG), recognizes local governments that successfully integrate equality and non-discrimination into their daily operations and public policies.
Other highlights of the month-long program include the creation of a new public mural and a major seminar on November 12, focusing on strategies to eliminate social disparities.
