New Initiative Brings Portuguese Literacy to Global Diaspora

The International Institute of the Portuguese Language (IILP) has officially launched “Ler Mais Perto” (Read Closer), a new digital initiative designed to strengthen linguistic ties among the global Portuguese-speaking diaspora.

The program offers 300 free access licenses to the “Ler em Rede” (Reading Online) platform, a comprehensive digital tool focused on enhancing reading, writing, and oral comprehension. The initiative primarily targets children and young adults aged 6 to 18, as well as educators working within migrant communities.

Connecting the Diaspora

Applications are now open for associations and citizen organizations located in host countries outside the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP) space. This includes organizations in Macau and other international regions where Portuguese-speaking communities reside.

To ensure a wide reach, the IILP will grant up to 20 licenses per organization. Interested groups must submit an application detailing their intended use of the platform and identifying the specific students or educators who will benefit from the resource.

A Collaborative Effort

The project is a result of a strategic partnership between the IILP and the Portuguese Institute of the Orient (IPOR). The digital platform itself was developed with the support of Camões – Institute for Cooperation and Language, Portugal’s primary body for promoting the Portuguese language abroad.

Organizations have until November 10 to apply for the program, which aims to preserve cultural heritage and academic success for the next generation of Portuguese speakers living abroad.
