Mozambique President Offers Solidarity After Cape Verde Crash
Mozambican President Daniel Chapo has extended his heartfelt condolences to the government and people of Cape Verde following a devastating bus accident on Fogo Island that claimed at least 25 lives, most of them children and young students.
A Message of Solidarity
In a formal message addressed to Cape Verdean President José Neves, President Chapo expressed “deep pain and dismay” over the tragedy, which occurred on Saturday night. The Mozambican leader emphasized the historical and brotherly ties between the two nations during this period of national mourning.
“In the face of this painful tragedy, which plunges numerous families into mourning and appalls the entire Cape Verdean nation, I offer our deepest condolences and the expression of our profound solidarity,” Chapo stated in a release from the Presidency. He added his hopes for a “quick and full recovery of the injured,” wishing the survivors strength to overcome the psychological and physical trauma of the crash.
Tragedy on Fogo Island
The accident occurred in the locality of Campanas de Cima, within the municipality of Santa Catarina do Fogo. The vehicle, which was transporting a group of students returning from a field trip, reportedly veered off the road and plunged approximately 30 meters down a steep embankment.
Local authorities confirmed that the majority of the 25 victims were young people. Several others remain hospitalized with varying degrees of injuries. The accident has sent shockwaves across the archipelago and the wider Lusophone community, prompting messages of support from leaders across the Portuguese-speaking world.
