Marítimo Signs Nilton Varela: 13th New Summer Arrival

Portuguese defender Nilton Varela has returned to his home soil, signing a two-season contract with Marítimo. The 25-year-old arrives from Belgian side Beerschot VA, marking the 13th new arrival in a massive summer overhaul for the Madeira-based club ahead of the 2026/27 campaign.

A Versatile Addition with Elite Pedigree

Varela brings a wealth of experience to Marítimo’s backline. A product of the prestigious youth academies at Sporting CP and Belenenses, he made his professional breakthrough during the 2019/20 season with B SAD. He remained a fixture there for three seasons before continuing his development with stints at FC Porto B and Estrela da Amadora.

Internationally, Varela’s talent has been recognized by two nations; he has represented both Portugal and Cape Verde at the youth level. His most recent chapter took him to the Belgian second tier with Beerschot, where he made 11 appearances during the latter half of last season.

Marítimo’s Massive Recruitment Drive

The signing of Varela underscores an incredibly busy transfer window for Marítimo, as the club seeks to climb the Primeira Liga table. He joins a diverse group of international arrivals, including:

  • Defenders: Nathanael Ogbeta (Plymouth Argyle), Tomás Tavares (Wisla Plock), Rafael Fernandes (Lille), and Gábor Szalai (Ferencváros).
  • Midfielders: Yellu Santiago (Hellas Verona), Maxime Dominguez (KS Cracovia), and Ayuma Israel (NK Istra 1961).
  • Forwards/Wingers: Bryan Limbombe (Heracles Almelo), Samuel Bamba (Bochum), and Maxime Boakye (Hamburg).
  • Goalkeeping/Others: Fran Vieites (Leicester City) and Ibrahim Alani (Valladolid).

With 13 new faces now in the locker room, Marítimo has signaled its intent to be a major force this season, blending domestic talent like Varela with reinforcements from across Europe’s top leagues.
