Cape Verde and China Sign Strategic Media Partnership Deal
Cape Verde and China have solidified their diplomatic ties by signing a comprehensive bilateral agreement focused on broadcasting and online audiovisual media. The deal, inked in Beijing, aims to modernize the island nation’s media landscape through content sharing, technological exchange, and professional development.
A Strategic Media Partnership
The agreement was formalized by Cape Verde’s Minister for Social Communication, Clóvis Silva, during the 7th China-Africa Forum held in the Chinese capital. According to a statement from the Ministry of Justice and Parliamentary Affairs, the partnership is designed to foster a robust exchange of radio, television, and online audiovisual programs between the two nations.
Key pillars of the agreement include:
- Content Exchange: Sharing programs and media assets across traditional and digital platforms.
- Professional Training: Joint initiatives to build capacity and train media professionals in both countries.
- Digital Transformation: Collaborative efforts focusing on technological innovation to help Cape Verde’s media outlets navigate the digital era.

“The signing of this agreement constitutes another step in strengthening the friendship and cooperation between Cape Verde and China,” the Ministry stated, noting that it opens new avenues for collaboration in an increasingly digital world.
Celebrating 50 Years of Diplomacy
This media pact arrives as Cape Verde and China celebrate 50 years of diplomatic relations. The Cape Verdean government has repeatedly characterized China as a “strategic and reliable partner,” with cooperation now spanning almost every major sector of the economy.
The media deal is just the latest in a series of high-profile collaborations this year. In February, the two nations signed economic and technical agreements worth approximately 12.7 million euros, which included funding for the rehabilitation of secondary schools.
Broadening the Scope of Cooperation
Beyond the newsroom, Chinese influence and investment continue to expand in Cape Verde:
- Infrastructure: A recent memorandum with China Machinery Engineering Corporation will drive projects in energy, water, and agriculture, specifically targeting the integrated development of São Vicente and the Northern islands.
- Healthcare: China recently donated medical equipment to Cape Verde’s primary hospital and continues to station a permanent medical team in the country.
- Education: Significant investments are underway to modernize school facilities across the archipelago.
