Mário Lopes da Rosa, Guinea-Bissau Diplomat, Dies at 71

Mário Lopes da Rosa, the veteran diplomat and former Foreign Minister of Guinea-Bissau, died today in Bissau at the age of 71. The government announced his passing following a prolonged illness, marking the end of a career that spanned decades of national service and international representation.

A Life Dedicated to Public Service

Widely known by the nickname “Maucas,” Lopes da Rosa was remembered by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as a professional of unwavering integrity. In an official statement, the government praised his “indelible mark on Bissau-Guinean diplomacy,” highlighting a career driven by dedication to the state.

A law graduate from Algeria, Lopes da Rosa was a seasoned career diplomat. He represented Guinea-Bissau across the globe, serving in critical diplomatic hubs including Algiers, Brussels, and New York.

Political and International Influence

Lopes da Rosa’s influence reached its peak on the global stage between 1991 and 1996, when he served as the Permanent Representative of Guinea-Bissau to the United Nations. His domestic political career was equally significant; he served as the Minister of Fisheries from 2012 to 2013 during a transitional government and later took the helm as the Minister of Foreign Affairs from 2014 to 2015.

Though a member of the political bureau of the African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde (PAIGC), he demonstrated his independent streak in 2005 by running as an independent candidate in the nation’s presidential elections.
