Lusophone Startups Lead Macau’s 929 Challenge Finals
Portuguese-speaking entrepreneurs are set to lead the charge at the upcoming 929 Challenge in Macau. Organizers announced today that startups from Lusophone nations have secured six of the eight finalist spots in the business category for the competition’s sixth edition, underscoring the growing synergy between Chinese investors and Portuguese-speaking markets.
A Dominant Presence for Lusophone Innovation
The final lineup features a diverse array of cutting-edge technology, with four projects from Brazil, two from Portugal, and two from mainland China. The finalists will face off on December 4, pitching their ventures to a high-level jury and a room full of potential investors.
Among the Portuguese contingent are Azores Life Science, which harnesses natural resources from the Azores for sustainable cosmetics, and ByonLink, a developer of advanced processors designed to power robotic prostheses. They are joined by HydroAI, a satellite-based platform that monitors reservoirs from space, and TWEVO, which utilizes artificial intelligence to optimize industrial video control.
Brazil’s finalists showcase a strong focus on AI and sustainability. Manycontent leverages AI for social media marketing, while Phycolabs aims to revolutionize the fashion industry by transforming seaweed into textiles. Rounding out the Lusophone business entries is the Mozambican project Xa Nene, an innovative circular economy venture that uses fly larvae to convert organic waste into nutrient-rich animal feed.
Strategic Alignment with China
Marco Rizzolio, one of the competition’s coordinators, noted the significant shift toward biotechnology and green tech. “The strong presence of biotechnology projects—an area where Portugal and Brazil excel—is very good because for China, this is one of the strategic sectors,” Rizzolio said.
Other notable finalists include Dermamatica, a veteran of the Macau startup scene that uses AI for 3D skin cancer screening, and Complear, which streamlines regulatory compliance for digital health companies. From the energy sector, Scubic is competing with a platform designed to enhance energy efficiency in public infrastructure.
Record Participation and Regional Integration
This year’s 929 Challenge saw a record-breaking 511 teams enter the fray. While the business category is dominated by established startups, the student category features eight teams: one from the University of Beira Interior in Portugal, five from Macau, and two from mainland China.
Beyond the pitch stage, the 16 finalists will embark on a tour of the Greater Bay Area’s innovation hubs, visiting Shenzhen, Guangzhou, and Hong Kong to explore manufacturing and scaling opportunities.
Co-organized by the Macao Forum and several regional universities, the 929 Challenge serves as a critical bridge for the “9” cities of the Pearl River Delta, the “2” Special Administrative Regions (Macau and Hong Kong), and the “9” Portuguese-speaking countries, fostering a unique international trade and technology ecosystem.
