Lamine Yamal’s Path to Messi and Ronaldo Status: Toñito Weighs In

Consistency is the only thing standing between Spanish sensation Lamine Yamal and the legendary status of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, according to former Sporting midfielder Toñito.

Speaking ahead of the highly anticipated 2026 World Cup round of 16 clash between Spain and Portugal this Monday, the Spanish record holder for appearances in the Portuguese First Division weighed in on the meteoric rise of the Barcelona youngster.

“Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo are on another scale,” the 49-year-old told Lusa. “For us to talk about other footballers, we have to see if they can maintain that level for many years. That is the great difficulty for Yamal, Kylian Mbappé, and Erling Haaland: they are excellent, but they must prove they can make history and reach those benchmarks.”

A New Era of Stars

Yamal, who became a European champion with Spain in 2024 a day after his 17th birthday, is currently making his World Cup debut. After finishing second in the 2025 Ballon d’Or voting, the winger has already notched one goal in four matches in the current tournament.

“We are in a new stage where players are competing to see who can dominate and achieve the feats of those two ‘gods,'” Toñito said. “It was a stroke of luck that Messi and Ronaldo appeared at the same time. I believe no one else will achieve what they did, but I could be wrong.”

Spain’s Tactical Shift

Toñito, a Portuguese champion with Sporting in 1999/00, warned that Portugal will face a different Spanish side than in recent encounters. With Nico Williams struggling for form, Spain may opt for a more “associative” style rather than a direct, vertical attack.

“Nico Williams is not at his best, and Álex Baena does not provide the same depth,” Toñito explained. “Spain will be equally strong but with a different character—less vertical. However, on Yamal’s wing, speed is guaranteed.”

Despite Yamal’s brilliance, Toñito believes Portugal holds the individual edge. “Yamal is one of the top players in the world, but Spain does not have as much individual variety across the pitch. If Portugal can find their best version, I am sure they will advance. Spain knows they are facing one of the strongest teams in the world.”

Breaking the Knockout Curse

Spain enters the match on the back of a 3-0 victory over Austria, marking the first time they have passed a World Cup knockout round since winning the trophy in 2010. They also boast a historic defensive record, having gone 519 minutes without conceding a goal—a streak spanning two tournaments.

However, Toñito questioned if that defensive wall has truly been tested. “We have to see if that strength is due to balance or the level of the opponents. So far, Spain hasn’t faced a team as powerful as the ones Portugal has already battled, like Croatia and Colombia.”

As the two Iberian rivals prepare to face off, Toñito noted that Portugal’s “Golden Generation” is hungry for the final step. “Portugal has been unfairly knocked out many times. This generation is missing that World Cup star, something they have deserved for years.”
