Fogo Island Bus Crash: Eight Dead in Cape Verde Tragedy
Tragedy struck the Cape Verdean island of Fogo on Saturday when a bus plunged down a steep embankment, killing at least eight people and leaving several others injured. The accident occurred in the municipality of Santa Catarina, casting a shadow over local religious festivities.
A Fatal Plunge
The vehicle was traveling between the communities of Chã das Caldeiras and Campanas de Cima when it veered off the road, falling approximately 30 meters. The sheer height of the fall contributed to the high death toll and the severity of the injuries sustained by surviving passengers.
President José Maria Neves confirmed the tragedy in a statement shared on social media. “Eight people are believed to have died and there are several injured,” Neves wrote on Facebook, extending his heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims and wishing a “speedy recovery to the injured.”
Community in Mourning
The City Council of Santa Catarina do Fogo echoed the President’s sentiments, expressing a “deep feeling of consternation” over the accident. In a sign of respect for the victims and their families, local authorities announced the immediate cancellation of a cultural event scheduled for Sunday in Estância Roque.
The event was part of the annual festivities honoring Our Lady of Light (Nossa Senhora da Luz), one of the island’s most significant celebrations. The council stated that the gravity of the incident made it impossible to proceed with the planned festivities as the community turns its focus toward mourning and supporting the survivors.
Emergency Response
Rescue operations were launched immediately following the crash. While the exact cause of the accident remains under investigation, the treacherous terrain of the island’s volcanic landscape is often a factor in road safety concerns. Local authorities have not yet released the identities of those killed or the current condition of the hospitalized survivors.
