Egypt Beats Australia on Penalties to Reach World Cup Round of 16

ARLINGTON, Texas – Egypt made history at the 2026 World Cup on Friday, securing their first-ever knockout stage victory with a tense penalty shootout win over Australia. Following a 1-1 draw through 120 minutes of play, the “Pharaohs” held their nerve to win 4-2 on penalties, booking a spot in the Round of 16.

Early Dominance and a Costly Mistake

In front of 70,244 fans at AT&T Stadium, Egypt wasted little time asserting their authority. While Australia’s Cristian Volpato nearly opened the scoring with a thunderous long-range strike that clipped the crossbar in the fifth minute, Egypt proved more clinical. In the 13th minute, Emam Ashour silenced the Australian supporters, ghosting toward the far post to meet a Karim Hafez cross with an unstoppable header.

Egypt’s defense, led by manager Hossam Hassan, effectively neutralized the “Socceroos” for the remainder of the first half. However, the momentum shifted ten minutes after the interval. Seeking to capitalize on their aerial strength, Australia leveled the score in the 55th minute when a dangerous free kick from Aiden O’Neill was inadvertently deflected into his own net by Egyptian defender Mohamed Hany.

Salah Sparks Extra-Time Surge

The match devolved into a tactical stalemate for much of the second half, though Egypt nearly snatched a winner in stoppage time. Ramy Rabia saw a powerful header miraculously saved by the Australian goalkeeper in the 93rd minute, forcing the game into extra time.

During the additional 30 minutes, Egyptian captain Mohamed Salah took control. The Liverpool star led a series of relentless attacks down the right flank, narrowly missing a chance to end the game when his 93rd-minute effort sailed just over the crossbar. Despite Egypt’s dominance in the final stages, the Australian defense held firm, sending the match to a shootout.

Clinical from the Spot

Egypt was flawless in the shootout, converting all four of their attempts. Australia’s fortunes faltered early when center-back Harry Souttar sent his effort over the bar. After Mohamed Salah coolly slotted his penalty home to put the pressure on, Lucas Herrington struck the crossbar, allowing Hossam Abdelmaguid to step up and bury the decisive spot-kick.

The victory marks a milestone for Egyptian football. Their only previous knockout appearance was a 4-2 loss to Hungary in 1934. The Pharaohs now move on to Atlanta for a Round of 16 clash on Tuesday, where they will face the winner of the match between Argentina and Cape Verde.
