Cape Verde Tourism: 17% Growth in Guest Arrivals for Q1 2026

The tourism sector in Cape Verde continues its strong upward trajectory, with guest arrivals surging nearly 17% in the first three months of 2026. According to the latest figures from the National Institute of Statistics (INE), the archipelago welcomed 379,657 guests during the first quarter, a 16.8% increase compared to the same period last year.

Total overnight stays also saw growth, rising 4.1% to surpass 1.7 million nights. This steady climb reinforces tourism’s position as the primary engine of the nation’s economy, fueled largely by expanded flight connections between the islands and major European hubs.

British Travelers Lead the Surge

International visitors remain the cornerstone of the industry, accounting for a staggering 96.4% of all hotel guests. The United Kingdom continues to hold its position as Cape Verde\’s most vital source market, contributing 92,433 visitors in the first quarter—roughly one-quarter of the country’s total tourist traffic.

Preference for Hotels Remains Strong

Traditional hotels continue to dominate the accommodation landscape, chosen by 81.9% of all visitors. While the volume of guests has jumped significantly, the average bed occupancy rate saw a slight dip, settling at 65% compared to 66% in the first quarter of 2025.

Analysts suggest that while the growth trend remains robust, the slight decrease in occupancy percentages despite higher guest numbers may reflect an increase in available lodging capacity or shorter average stays. Nevertheless, the overall data confirms that Cape Verde remains a top-tier destination for international travelers seeking sun and sea.
