Cape Verde President: World Cup Run Signals Global Rise
The President of Cape Verde, José Maria Neves, declared on Wednesday that his nation’s historic performance at the 2026 World Cup is a powerful testament to the country’s potential to compete with the world’s elite, not just in sports, but across all sectors of development.
Speaking from the Cape Verde Cultural Center in Lisbon during celebrations for the 51st anniversary of the country’s independence, Neves highlighted how the national team—affectionately known as the “Blue Sharks”—has become a catalyst for national transformation. “The Blue Sharks’ qualification allows us to mobilize inspiration,” Neves told reporters. “It allows us to do everything so that Cape Verde continues to surpass itself and imagine a future of prosperity, excellence, and opportunities for all Cape Verdeans, both on the islands and in the diaspora.”
A Giant-Killing Spirit on the World Stage
The President’s remarks came during the inauguration of a new exhibition titled “National Pride: The Teams that Take Cape Verde to the World.” The timing is poignant, as the underdog nation prepares for a high-stakes Round of 16 clash against defending champions Argentina this Friday.
Cape Verde secured its place in the knockout stages following a gritty, undefeated run in Group H. Despite being heavy underdogs, the Blue Sharks earned three points through strategic draws against global heavyweights Spain (0-0) and Uruguay (2-2), alongside a scoreless stalemate with Saudi Arabia.
“The important thing is to have confidence, to have character, and to sweat for the jersey,” Neves said when asked about the upcoming match against Lionel Messi’s side. “We must play a good game against another champion to get the best possible result and stay in the competition.”
Beyond the Pitch: A New Era of International Standing
Regardless of Friday’s outcome, the President believes the tournament has already fundamentally altered the trajectory of the nation. “Cape Verde has already gained great projection in the international arena, and nothing will be the same as before,” he underlined.
President Neves is currently in the middle of a four-day official visit to Portugal. Earlier this week, he was honored with the University of Coimbra Medal, recognized for his career-long contributions to the consolidation of democracy and the economic development of the archipelago. By linking athletic excellence to national progress, Neves is signaling to the world that Cape Verde belongs on the global stage.
