Cape Verde President Hails ‘Excellent’ Ties with Portugal

Cape Verdean President José Maria Neves extended warm congratulations to his Portuguese counterpart, António José Seguro, and the people of Portugal on Monday, marking the Day of Portugal, Camões, and the Portuguese Communities.

Strengthening Historical Bonds

In a formal letter, President Neves expressed profound gratitude for the “excellence of the bonds of friendship, solidarity, and cooperation” that define the relationship between the two nations. He emphasized a “firm will” to continue deepening and consolidating the historical and fraternal ties that link the archipelago with its former administrative partner.

Highly Anticipated State Visit

The message comes at a pivotal moment for bilateral relations. President Neves noted he is “expectant” regarding President Seguro’s upcoming state visit to Cape Verde. While specific dates have not yet been finalized, Seguro announced on May 28 that he intends to travel to the archipelago in July. That announcement was delivered via a message to the International Meeting on Atlantic Creoleness held in the capital city of Praia.

This upcoming visit follows a significant milestone in diplomatic history. The last Portuguese Head of State to visit Cape Verde was Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, who traveled to the islands on July 5, 2025, to participate in the 50th-anniversary celebrations of Cape Verde’s independence. That trip marked the final official visit of Rebelo de Sousa’s presidency, setting the stage for Seguro to continue the tradition of high-level engagement between the two countries.
