Cape Verde PM Endorses José Maria Neves for Re-election

Cape Verdean Prime Minister Francisco Carvalho has officially endorsed President José Maria Neves for a second term, emphasizing the need for experienced leadership during a period of global uncertainty.

Carvalho, who also chairs the ruling African Party for the Independence of Cape Verde (PAICV), announced his support via social media, aligning his government’s weight behind the incumbent ahead of the November 15 election.

A Call for Stability

“In a world marked by so many uncertainties, experience, serenity, and a sense of statehood are fundamental for the stability and future of our country,” Carvalho wrote on Facebook. In an accompanying video, the Prime Minister argued that Cape Verde’s development requires leaders who have “already proven themselves” and who “place the nation above personal or partisan interests.”

Neves is a veteran of Cape Verdean politics, having served three terms as Prime Minister between 2001 and 2016 before winning the presidency in 2021. Carvalho noted that Neves’ extensive career provides him with a “profound knowledge” of the archipelago’s unique challenges.

The Path to Re-election

The endorsement reinforces the current political alignment in Praia. Carvalho was sworn in as Prime Minister this past June after the PAICV reclaimed legislative power in May, ending a decade of governance by the Movement for Democracy (MpD).

“As Prime Minister, I expect from José Maria Neves what he has always shown himself to be: a fair and impartial arbiter,” Carvalho added.

A Competitive Field

Neves faces a field of five challengers in the upcoming ballot. His primary opposition comes from former minister Joana Rosa, who carries the backing of the MpD. The field is rounded out by four independent candidates: doctor Gilson Alves, jurist Casimiro Pina, judge Antero Tavares, and teacher Loisito Sousa.

As the campaign enters its final stretch, the support of the Prime Minister and the ruling party solidifies Neves’ position as the frontrunner in his bid to secure another five years in the Presidência da República.
