Cape Verde Awards Medal of Merit to Nazarene Leader Araujo

The Cape Verdean government has awarded Pastor David Araújo, leader of the Church of the Nazarene, the 1st Degree Medal of Altruistic Merit. The honor recognizes his lifelong dedication to faith, social cohesion, and the protection of human dignity across the archipelago.

A Legacy of Faith and Advocacy

In a decree published Tuesday in the Official Gazette, the government praised Araújo for his “firm commitment to social causes.” The citation highlighted his work in advocating for a fairer society and his sensitivity to the economic and social disparities between Cape Verde’s islands.

According to the government, Araújo’s life is defined by “overcoming personal trials,” an experience that has transformed him into a national reference point for both civic and social leadership. His leadership style is noted for prioritizing the integral development of the human person above all else.

From São Nicolau to National Leadership

Born on February 16, 1962, in Tchanzinha on the island of São Nicolau, Emanuel David Simas Araújo has dedicated decades to the ministry. After serving in various pastoral roles throughout the islands, he rose to become the superintendent of the Church of the Nazarene in Cape Verde in 1997.

The Church of the Nazarene is a global Protestant denomination with a significant presence in Cape Verde. Internationally, the organization boasts approximately 2.5 million members across 30,000 congregations.

Joint Recognition of Religious Leaders

The announcement of Araújo’s distinction coincided with the honoring of Bishop Emeritus Arlindo Furtado of the Catholic Church, who will receive the same award. By honoring leaders from both the Protestant and Catholic faiths, the government underscores the vital role religious institutions play in the nation’s social fabric.

Prime Minister Ulisses Correia e Silva is scheduled to present the medals of merit to both leaders during a formal ceremony this Friday.
