Bruno Pereira Ribeiro Wins Narrativa – Fujifilm Prize
Photographer Bruno Pereira Ribeiro has been named the winner of the second Narrativa – Fujifilm Prize for his evocative project “Westernmost,” a visual exploration of the landscape and human footprint on Santo Antão Island in Cape Verde.
A Journey to the Edge of the Atlantic
The winning project, “Westernmost,” delves into the intricate relationship between a territory’s natural environment and human intervention. Through a narrative that blends documentary observation with a deep reflection on spatial boundaries, Ribeiro captures the unique contrasts of the island territory. The jury—composed of renowned photographers Yael Martinez, Ana Rocha, and Mário Cruz—selected Ribeiro’s work from a pool of 175 applicants.
For his achievement, Ribeiro will receive a €3,500 prize and the opportunity to present “Westernmost” in a solo exhibition at the Narrativa gallery in Lisbon, scheduled to open in January 2027.
Honorable Mentions: Identity and the Tourist Gaze
The jury also recognized two other standout projects with honorable mentions, highlighting the diverse photographic styles submitted this year:
- “Secret Garden” by Tatiana Iartseva: A deeply personal study of identity and repressed human nature. Iartseva utilizes self-representation and artisanal printing techniques involving natural elements to explore the human figure’s transformation within its environment.
- “Parque” by David Henriques: A critical look at the Algarve’s tourism boom. Henriques focuses on the condominium where he lives—a property tied to his family for generations—to examine the friction between permanent residents and the transient nature of holiday accommodations.
Fostering Contemporary Photography
The Narrativa – Fujifilm Prize is open to photographers aged 18 and older, designed to spotlight unpublished contemporary works from artists at various stages of their careers. The selected winners represent a broad spectrum of visual storytelling, from social essays to authorial research.
Narrativa, the non-profit cultural association behind the award, was established in Lisbon in 2022. It serves as a dedicated hub for the medium, featuring a gallery, studio, and a free-access library. The association grew out of a masterclass program launched in 2018 by Mário Cruz, an acclaimed photojournalist and two-time World Press Photo winner.
While the dates for the honorable mention showcases have yet to be finalized, the association confirmed they will be presented to the public in an open session at the Narrativa headquarters.
