The Alentejo region is buzzing with activity this week, from unexpected police discoveries in a nursing home to the rescue of majestic wildlife and the launch of major summer festivals. Here are the highlights from across the region.

Guns Seized at Beja Nursing Home

In a surprising turn of events, the Public Security Police (PSP) seized two firearms from a nursing home in Beja. Officers from the Weapons and Explosives Nucleus (NAE) were called to the Santa Casa da Misericórdia facility after a pistol and a revolver were discovered among the belongings of a newly admitted resident.

The Beja District Command confirmed that the seizure was conducted safely after the owner agreed to voluntarily surrender the weapons. Both firearms have been declared forfeited to the State.

Injured Eagle-Owl Rescued in Alter do Chão

A Eurasian eagle-owl (Bubo bubo) is on the road to recovery after being rescued in the municipality of Alter do Chão. The injured bird was brought to the local National Republican Guard (GNR) post by a concerned citizen on Monday.

Officers from the Nature and Environment Protection Service (SEPNA) took charge of the bird, transporting it to the Institute for Nature Conservation and Forests (ICNF) at the Serra de São Mamede Natural Park. Experts will provide clinical evaluation and specialized treatment, with the ultimate goal of releasing the owl back into the wild once it is healthy.

Sines Celebrates Global Flavors at “Tasquinhas”

The seaside city of Sines is set to become a culinary hotspot starting this Friday. The annual “Tasquinhas Sines” food festival will host 20 exhibitors on Vasco da Gama Avenue, overlooking the scenic bay and fishing port.

Running through August 2, the event blends traditional Alentejo seafood and snacks with international flavors from Brazil, Cape Verde, and the Orient. Organized by the Sines Municipal Council, the festival features a lively mix of “sunset parties,” live concerts, and rows of food stalls run by local associations and restaurants.

Festival das Cores Brings Free Music and Fun to Santiago do Cacém

Vila Nova de Santo André is preparing for a vibrant weekend as the 12th annual Festival das Cores (Festival of Colors) takes over Central Park from Friday to Sunday. The free-entry event, organized by the ArteCorGeração Association, promises a high-energy lineup featuring Delfins, Dillaz, and Pluto.

Beyond the music, the festival is famous for its “color tosses” and foam parties. The weekend schedule is packed with activities including a color run, live graffiti art, volleyball, and a handicraft market. Families can also enjoy dedicated children’s spaces and a diverse food court offering both local and international cuisine.
